How to Choose Between Traditional Braces and Invisalign®

June 4, 2019

If you or your child have crooked or misaligned teeth, there are two options when it comes to straightening your smile: Invisalign ® clear aligners or traditional braces.

Until Invisalign ® came along, metal braces were the only way to straighten teeth. Nowadays there are also ceramic braces and lingual braces in addition to metal and Invisalign ®, which are all options for those who want to improve the appearance of their smiles.

Before deciding on one or the other, it is important to note that both options ultimately lead to the same result. Keep reading to learn more about each option! If you have any questions about either option or would like to schedule an appointment, get in touch with our team today!

Braces

How They Work

Braces are metal brackets that have been bonded to the enamel of each tooth. They are held together by thin wires that are adjusted over time to help straighten teeth.

Maintenance

The braces, wires, and rubbers bands can attract bits of food and plaque and will need to be cleaned thoroughly after each meal. With braces, the brackets and wires can interfere with brushing and flossing, and you will have to maneuver in and around these components. Unfortunately, this makes it easier for patients to neglect oral health during treatment and they end up with stained teeth and an increased risk of tooth decay and/or gum disease.

When you have braces there are certain foods that must be avoided such as carrots, apples, and corn on the cob. Having to think about every single item of food you put in your mouth can be quite frustrating.

Dentist Visits

With traditional braces, you'll need to schedule an appointment every 4 weeks for new bands, wires, and other adjustments.

Pros

  • Less expensive treatment
  • Treats more severe orthodontic issues
  • Cannot lose them
  • Fun color choices for rubber bands
  • Multiple options including ceramic and lingual

Invisalign®

How It Works

Invisalign ® aligners are made using a 3D image of your teeth. The aligners are worn like mouth-guards and every two weeks the tray is adjusted until your teeth are shifted into ideal positions.

Maintenance

Since you can take the clear aligners out to eat, brush, and free they will need to be cleaned properly. You will need to rinse your aligners when you remove them, soak them to keep them clean and sanitized, brush and floss before reinserting them, clean them with antibacterial soap and brush them gently.

When you are wearing the aligners, you need to be mindful of what you put in your mouth. You should not be eating or drinking anything but water while wearing Invisalign ® .

Dentist Visits

You will need to schedule follow-up visits every 4-6 weeks to ensure that the treatment is progressing as planned.

Pros

  • Clear and nearly invisible
  • Less dietary restrictions
  • Easier oral hygiene
  • A better option for athletes
